Why Is My Cannabis Grow Underperforming? What to Check First
When a commercial cannabis grow underperforms, look in the rooms before you blame the market. The places we check first are night and day climate, flower-room dehumidification, light uniformity, irrigation, genetics fit, canopy spacing and airflow, and daily records. Find the biggest lever first, then fix the rooms in order.
Signs your grow is failing
You do not need to know the cause before you ask for help. Start with what your records and your team can show you:
- Yields are down harvest over harvest.
- Batches have failed lab tests.
- The same room has the same problem every cycle.
- Costs keep rising while output does not.
- No one can clearly explain why the facility is missing its numbers.
Each of these is a reason to look, not proof of a cause. A failed test does not tell you on its own which room condition or practice is behind it, so bring the actual lab report, not a summary of it.
Write down what is going wrong, where it happens, and which records back that up. "The grow is struggling" starts a conversation. "This room keeps missing its numbers, and here are its records" starts a turnaround.
What should you check in a low yield commercial grow?
This is the list HYE LYF works through first. It is a review list, not a claim that every facility has these problems or that one change will raise yield.
| Where yield leaks | What we check |
|---|---|
| Climate, day versus night | Temperature and humidity records across both periods, and whether what you see on a walk matches the recorded history. |
| Dehumidification in flower | Whether the equipment and operating plan were set for flower-room conditions or carried over from veg. |
| Light uniformity | Lighting layout, available measurements, and differences between positions in the room. |
| Irrigation and fertigation | The plan for that room, how consistently it is delivered, the records, and whether every shift follows the same instructions. |
| Genetics fit to the room | Which genetics run in which room, their recorded performance, and whether a recurring problem follows the room or the selection. |
| Canopy spacing and airflow | Plant spacing, overlapping canopy, and air movement through the planted area. |
| Daily data and SOPs | What gets recorded, who reviews it, and whether the written procedures match the work being done. |
The point is to compare the plan with the room you actually have. Before we recommend a purchase or a new procedure, we ask what evidence supports the change and what is still unknown.
Why do we check night climate and the canopy?
A daytime walk is not the whole picture. We ask for records that cover day and night instead of assuming the room holds the conditions you see while standing in it.
University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension explains that, with the same amount of moisture in the air, relative humidity goes up as air cools. Its greenhouse guidance also says closely spaced plants with overlapping canopies can create microclimates with higher humidity than the surrounding air, and that high relative humidity promotes many leaf, flower and fruit diseases, including Botrytis gray mold.
That is general greenhouse guidance, not a diagnosis of your facility. It is why we check temperature, humidity, spacing and air movement together. For the flower-room side of this, see grow room dehumidification for flower rooms.
What to gather before a cannabis grow turnaround review
Bring what you already have: room-by-room harvest records, lab reports, environmental logs, irrigation instructions, equipment information and current SOPs. If something is missing, say so. A missing record becomes a question for the walk, not a reason to guess.
Be ready to say who controls the facility and who holds the license, what infrastructure exists, what you think is missing, and what you want: help with recurring room problems, a cultivation team, or a decision about the building itself.
If the building is the real question, read fix it, lease it, or sell it. Keep that decision separate from diagnosing the crop.
How HYE LYF works on an underperforming grow
HYE LYF is a cannabis cultivation support company in Southern California, led by Hovik Akopyan. In Hovik's words: "We save grows, failing grows. We bring them up into the green from the red. We find the problems, and the levers to make them produce more." And: "Between myself and my team we have over 30 years of experience running, building and operating."
The work starts with a call and a facility overview, then the license and local permit context, then a walk of the rooms and infrastructure, then a next-step plan. We go after the biggest lever first and work room by room. Depending on what we find, the scope can include environmental strategy, irrigation and fertigation planning, lighting layout support, crop cycle planning or SOP development support. See what we do.
HYE LYF finds equipment problems and specs the fix. Licensed contractors install and service the equipment: servicing HVAC or refrigeration equipment fixed to a building is contractor work under California Business and Professions Code section 7026.1(a)(1).
HYE LYF does not hold a cannabis license. Our team works inside your licensed facility, under your license, as your cultivation team.
FAQ
Why is my cannabis grow underperforming if the equipment looks fine?
Equipment is only one part of what we check. We also look at actual room conditions day and night, irrigation practice, genetics fit, canopy spacing and daily records. A spec sheet does not tell you how a room is performing.
How fast can a grow turn around?
It depends on what we find. A procedure change, an equipment problem and a facility problem need different next steps, so we do not promise a timeline before we have walked the rooms.
Do you need to take over my license?
No. For a turnaround, the license stays yours, and cultivation happens under your state license. The harvest stays yours and is sold through your licensed channels. HYE LYF sells no cannabis. If you want out instead, depending on what you need and what we agree, HYE LYF can take over the grow, the building, the operations, or the licensed business itself.
Can HYE LYF run cultivation day to day?
Yes, as for-hire cultivation under your license. If a role counts as managing, directing or controlling operations, state rules require that person to be disclosed to the Department of Cannabis Control as an owner (DCC regulation 15003(a)(2)). This is not legal advice.
Do you guarantee results for a failing cannabis grow?
No. We find the problems and the levers and do the agreed work. We do not guarantee yield, test results, profit or a date.
