Grow Room Dehumidification: Check It for Flower, Not Veg

Check grow room dehumidification against your flower rooms, not veg. Look at readings through the lights-off period, inside the canopy, and at temperature and humidity together, and confirm the equipment is running and draining. HYE LYF reviews the room and specs the fix; licensed contractors install and service the equipment.

Why flower rooms are the test

If the problem is mold, humidity alarms or falling quality in flower, that is where we look. The question is whether the dehumidification plan was built for full flower or carried over from what the room did in veg.

Plants put a lot of water into the air. The USGS Water Science School notes that during a growing season "a leaf will transpire many times more water than its own weight."

Temperature matters as much as the equipment. University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension explains that, with the same amount of moisture in the air, cool air holds less moisture than warm air, so relative humidity goes up as temperatures cool, and excess water vapor is released as dew or fog. That is why we check temperature and humidity together, including after lights off.

The same Kentucky guidance says high relative humidity promotes diseases including Botrytis gray mold, and that closely spaced plants with overlapping canopies can create microclimates more humid than the surrounding air. So a reading at the wall is not the whole story; we look inside the canopy.

This is general plant and greenhouse science, not a cannabis-specific humidity prescription.

Signs your dehumidification is not keeping up

These are signs to check, not proof that the equipment is undersized:

  • Humidity alarms or high readings after lights off.
  • Condensation or dew on room surfaces.
  • Gray mold or failed microbial tests coming from the same rooms.
  • Dehumidifiers that seem to run all the time.
  • One room that is always worse than the others.

For each sign, bring what you have: which room, the crop stage, temperature and humidity readings, alarm history and equipment information. If you do not have a record, say so. A sign is a starting point, not a reason to guess at a new unit.

If humidity is one of several problems, see why a commercial grow underperforms for the full room-by-room review.

What we check for commercial grow room dehumidification

We treat grow room humidity control as a room-by-room review:

What we check Why
Readings through the lights-off period Relative humidity goes up as air cools, and nobody is standing in the room at night to see it.
Readings in the canopy, not just at the wall Crowded, overlapping canopies can hold more humid air than the room around them.
Temperature and humidity together Relative humidity changes with temperature even when the amount of moisture stays the same.
Airflow and plant spacing Kentucky's guidance says plant spacing should allow air movement through all stages of growth.
Equipment running and draining We confirm the equipment is actually running and draining, not just installed.
Capacity planned for full flower, not veg We check what room conditions and crop plan the dehumidification was sized for.

The goal is to define the problem clearly enough to spec a fix. We do not treat every humidity alarm as a reason to buy another dehumidifier.

Bring the equipment specs and any design documents. We review them alongside the room, plant count, irrigation and HVAC. Those are inputs to sizing, which is done by a licensed contractor and designer.

Who reviews the problem and who does the equipment work?

HYE LYF reviews dehumidification needs, environmental strategy and HVAC planning. We find the problem, spec the fix, and coordinate vendors and contractors. See what we do.

Licensed contractors install and service HVAC and dehumidification equipment: servicing HVAC or refrigeration equipment fixed to a building is contractor work under California Business and Professions Code section 7026.1(a)(1). HYE LYF does not install, repair or service that equipment. Stamped plans come from licensed engineers and architects. This is not legal advice.

Keep those roles clear in any scope you sign. A cultivation review, equipment sizing, a stamped design and an installation are different jobs. Ask who owns each one before work starts.

How HYE LYF works on this

HYE LYF is a cannabis cultivation support company in Southern California, led by Hovik Akopyan. In Hovik's words: "We save grows, failing grows. We bring them up into the green from the red." And: "Between myself and my team we have over 30 years of experience running, building and operating."

It starts with a call and a facility overview. We ask what the facility is, who controls it and the license, what infrastructure exists, what is missing, and what your goal is. Then we look at the license and local permit context, walk the affected rooms, run the checks above, and lay out the fix and who does each part.

HYE LYF does not hold a cannabis license. Our team works inside your licensed facility, under your license, as your cultivation team.

FAQ

What humidity should a flower room run at?

We do not publish one number for every flower room. University of Kentucky's general greenhouse guidance says daytime relative humidity below 70% is often low enough to inhibit disease, but that is not a cannabis-specific target. We set targets room by room, together with temperature.

How do I size a dehumidifier for a flower room?

Sizing depends on the room, plant count, irrigation and HVAC. HYE LYF reviews the need; a licensed contractor and designer size the equipment. We do not give a universal formula or a pints-per-day number without that review.

Does a dehumidifier running all the time mean it is too small?

Not by itself. We treat it as a sign to check, then look at the readings, the canopy, whether the unit is draining, and what the capacity was planned for.

Does gray mold mean the room needs more dehumidification?

Not on its own. High relative humidity promotes Botrytis gray mold, but we still check the readings, canopy, spacing, airflow and equipment before we spec a fix.

Can HYE LYF replace or service our dehumidifiers?

No. We review the need, spec the fix and coordinate the contractor. Licensed contractors install and service the equipment.
